Ladder Bunk Bed
The solid-wood ladder-design bunk bed is available in two heights and two sizes. It is part of our Cottage Collection, which is named for the built-in ladders on both headboards. With a 400-pound weight capacity per deck, this bunk bed is safe for kids, teens, and adults.
The ladder design bunk bed cutaway style is a unique model from the ladder design line, available in single over double and extra long. The cutaway style headboard allows for more maneuverability in an otherwise tight space. In other words, less wood on the headboards gives your room a more airy feeling while you still can enjoy this most common size.
This bunk bed comes in 65 and 73 inches in height. We recommend using the 65 version if you have small kids or low ceilings and use the 73 version for teens or adults. Both options are fine for a standard 8-foot ceiling. Take advantage of extra-long versions for teens or adults.
Add matching case goods, like nightstands and dressers, or underbed storage trundles for extra storage.
This bunk bed can turn into two individual beds. It includes four headboards, four mattress rails and two sets of slats.
Four metal pings are between the upper and lower bunk, about 2 inches long and hidden inside the wood.
The prominent feature of this bunk is the built-in ladder. You do not need an additional ladder; use headboards to climb. This ladder style is easier to use than a regular one because of the extra space you have. It acts just like monkey bars. Another feature of the ladder design bunk bed is the complete enclosure of the upper loft. Since you climb from the headboard, there is no need for a large opening gap.
A standard-size mattress fits this bunk bed just fine; we recommend a mattress that is a maximum of eight inches thick. For the 65 version, it is better to use a six-inch thick mattress for the lower bunk for better spacing.
We have different collections of beds and bunk beds, and each group has its characteristics. Our Cottage collection has a husky and traditional look and feel, which you may see in a cottage, hence the name. This collection has its roots in Ontario’s cottage country.
In this collection, we use mortise and tenon joinery for most strength. All drawers inside the dressers or nightstands are dovetailed joinery. Our Cottage collection is a lifelong investment; we build them strong enough to last you a long time.
We use durable, non-toxic, low-VOC finishes to make the Cottage collection the clean, healthy choice for your home. All colours are wood stain, not paint, including the white finish. Wood stain is ideal for showing the natural beauty of wood grains. You can also choose unfinished if you wish to apply your own colour.
Hardware and Assembly
We use high-quality hardware for this collection. We include the hardware, instructions, and a simple allen key. You will need a Phillips screwdriver and do not need power tools.
Assembly of our Cottage collection is reasonably straightforward. You do not need to assemble the ladders, headboards, case goods and underbed storage drawers. We ship them pre-assembled. Case goods are items such as nightstands and dressers. We recommend two adults for easier assembly and handling.
Our Cottage collection mainly uses Southern Yellow Pine, the wood of choice on wooden roller coasters. We use premium wood, which is knot-free with no finger-joint pieces for maximum strength, and that is how we can achieve 400 pounds of weight capacity.
For case goods, we use plywood for the back panels and the bottom of the drawers. The case goods' casing, or shell, is solid wood and solid wood veneer for the top part.
Solid wood products, such as bed frames, loft beds, and bunk beds, are robust, easy to maintain, beautiful to look at and retain value.
Slats in our Cottage collection are knotty solid pine. Each slat is 5.5 inches wide, with nine slats per deck. That is nine slats for lofts and bed frames and 18 slats per bunk bed. All sizes use the same number of slats per deck.
Space between the slats is 3.5 inches for single and double and more for other sizes. If you wish to add an extra bed slat to reduce the spacing or as a spare, you can order one individual slat.
We do not use center support for our queen and extra-long beds and bunks in this collection. You must screw in every slat from both ends to the mattress rails, which is sufficient to achieve the strength you need. We add a center support bar to our king-size bed frames in this collection.
