Futon Mattresses Made in Canada
Our futon mattresses are made in Canada and designed to work properly on futon frames — as a sofa during the day and a bed at night. A futon mattress is different from a regular mattress. It needs to fold, sit flat, and keep its shape over time. That’s why ours are built with layers of cotton and foam, not springs.
We offer a few futon mattress types, with the main difference being foam density. Foam density affects comfort, weight, and how well the mattress holds up when used for sleeping.
How Our Futon Mattresses Are Built
Each futon mattress is made using multiple internal layers. Cotton batting gives the mattress its traditional futon feel and breathability. Foam layers add structure and support. The higher the foam density, the longer the mattress keeps its shape.
Low-density foam is lighter and more economical. Medium-density foam offers better durability. High-density foam is denser and more supportive, making it better suited for frequent sleeping. The memory foam option adds pressure relief while still working properly on a futon frame.
Because cotton is naturally compressible, futon mattress thickness is not fixed. Thickness depends on the internal layers rather than a standard height, which is normal for futon mattresses.
Futon Mattress Sizes and Measurements
Our futon mattresses follow standard futon mattress dimensions used across Canada:
• Twin futon mattress: 39" × 74"
• Full futon mattress: 54" × 74"
• Queen futon mattress: 60" × 80"
• King-size futon mattress: 76" × 80"
These measurements apply to width and length. Height varies by construction. If you are replacing an existing mattress, check your futon mattress measurements against your frame.
Using a Futon Mattress for Sleeping
You can use a futon mattress for sleeping, but performance varies by type. For occasional overnight use, a standard or medium-density futon mattress works well. For regular or everyday sleeping, a high-density or memory foam futon mattress is the better choice.
Low-density options tend to feel softer at first and gradually become firmer as the cotton layers compress over time. Foam-reinforced models hold their shape longer and provide more consistent support. Some customers also use these mattresses as a floor futon mattress, especially in flexible living spaces.
Futon Sofa Bed Components
A futon sofa bed combines three essential components: a futon frame, a futon mattress, and a cover. The frame allows the futon to function as a sofa during the day and convert into a bed at night. The mattress provides both seating comfort and sleeping support, while a futon cover helps protect the mattress and update the look of the sofa bed. All three elements are required for a complete and functional futon sofa bed setup.
Two-Sided Construction and Casing
All futon mattresses in this category are two-sided, allowing you to flip and rotate them to help extend their lifespan. Permanent tufting keeps the internal layers in place and prevents shifting when the mattress is folded or used as a couch.
The outer casing is made from a durable, canvas-style polyester fabric. It is not removable due to the tufted construction. We recommend using a mattress protector for added protection. For sofa use, a separate futon cover can be added to protect the mattress and change the appearance.
Shipping and Handling
We fold futon mattresses in half for shipping, secure them, and pack them in a protective plastic bag. We ship orders using carriers experienced in handling furniture.
Traditional Futon
The futon has its roots in Japan, where it was traditionally used as a simple, foldable sleeping surface placed directly on the floor. Made primarily from cotton, early futons were valued for their breathability, flexibility, and ability to be stored away during the day to maximize living space.
Modern futon mattresses used in Canada are inspired by this traditional concept but adapted for today’s homes. They are designed to work on futon frames and sofa beds, combining flexible construction with added support for seating and sleeping. While materials and construction have evolved, the core purpose remains the same: a versatile mattress that folds, sits flat, and supports multi-use living.
