The most common bed frame style in Canada is the mattress and boxspring combination, which we call traditional. These beds consist of a headboard and footboard with side rails. A boxspring sits on the rails, with the mattress placed on top.

They usually have low clearance, leaving little storage space. While older models had real springs inside, today’s boxsprings are mostly empty and sometimes called a foundation. Traditional frames are less practical for small homes or apartments. This is why we don’t carry this type of bed frame in our store.

Daybeds are essentially modified platform beds. A frame with headboard, footboard, and a side rail creates a bed frame couch style that doubles as seating during the day. Day beds have slats and ample ground clearance. Unlike platform beds, day beds are mainly available in twin size and sometimes in full size and extra-long versions. You don’t see any queen or king-size daybeds. You can use day beds in place of sofa beds.

A Murphy bed is designed to fold vertically into a cabinet or wall during the day, saving space. These frames often include metal hinges and are commonly built with veneer wood on MDF.

Poster beds originally had a practical use: the posts supported a canopy to keep insects away. Today, they’re decorative and can be designed in both platform and traditional styles. A mates bed is a platform frame with one row of built-in drawers. Available in all sizes, including extra-long and king, they’re often categorized under storage beds.

A captain bed is another variation of the platform frame, but it includes two rows of drawers, providing more storage. Due to their height, they can appear bulkier and are more difficult to climb into.

A cabinet bed is similar to a Murphy bed, but instead of folding vertically, the mattress tucks neatly into a cabinet. It looks like a dresser when closed and is often more affordable than a full Murphy system.

This is one of the most space-saving different bed frame styles and works well for multipurpose rooms or guest areas.

A trundle bed is a second bed stored underneath another. On wheels, it can be pulled out whenever needed – perfect for sleepovers or guests.

Compared to bunk beds, they require cleared floor space to roll out, but they remain one of the different types of bed frame styles, great for small spaces.

A storage trundle bed is a hybrid design. Instead of just holding a mattress, the under-bed trundle is built as a storage box with dividers. You can use it as storage or remove the dividers to fit a mattress.
