Bed Frame Sizes Guide

A bed frame size is determined by its mattress size. In Canada, mattresses are standard in length and width.
Bed frames follow the same naming. In this article, we talk about bed’s size in relation to its mattress, but the frame itself can vary in size based on the design. Sleigh design beds, for example, are much longer when compared to beds with vertical headboards.
1. Single
1. Single
Single size, also called Twin size, mattress, sizes:
Length: 75 inch or 190 cm
Width: 39 inch or 99 cm
Usage: Single size beds are also called twin size. The same thing, different names, similar to sofa vs chesterfield. These beds are perfect for children, teens, or even adults living in small apartments.

2. Single XL
2. Single XL
Single XL size mattress:
Length: 80 inch or 203 cm
Width: 39 inch or 99 cm
Usage: A single extra long is 5 inches longer than a standard Single size bed, but it’s the same width. It’s also called Twin XL, and is perfect for tall people who don’t want their feet to hang over the end of the mattress. You do need to buy matching XL bed sheets but they are readily available.

3. Double
3. Double
Double size mattress:
Length: 75 inch or 190 cm
Width: 54 inch or 137 cm
Usage: Another confusing naming of the same bed. A double bed is also called full size. This size bed is perfect for petite couples or an alternative to single extra long. Tall people can sleep diagonally on this size mattress. Single and Double are the same length. A double bed is 15”, or 38 cm, wider. That is why you can stack a single over a double size bed and have yourself a bunk bed.

4. Double XL
4. Double XL
Queen size mattress:
Length: 80 inch or 203 cm
Width: 54 inch or 137 cm
Usage: Extra-long options are ‘in-between’ sizes. If you wish you had space for queen and a double is just too snug, then the Double extra-long bed is your ticket. This is also a good size for guest rooms. You can place two extra-long double beds side by side with a common night table in between. This is 12” by 80” saving on floor space, nearly 7 square feet, which is substantial compared to the same configuration with two queen beds.

5. Queen
5. Queen
Queen size mattress:
Length: 80 inch or 203 cm
Width: 60 inch or 152 cm
Usage: Luckily there is only one name for this size, no confusion. A queen bed is the most common bed size for adults. A perfect balance of taking floor space and still providing a comfortable sleeping area for two individuals.

6. King
6. King
King size mattress:
Length: 80 inch or 203 cm
Width: 76 inch or 193 cm
Usage: Although a queen size is the most common size, a king-size bed arguably is more comfortable. Technically speaking, a king-size is the same as putting two extra-long single beds side by side. In other words, you get the same sleeping space as an adult as when you were a kid. A king-size bed is perfect for adults well healed in their relationship. After a few cozy years in a queen-size bed, it may be time to get some proper rest. Of course, you’ll need a more spacious room as well.
NOTE: some manufacturers also make 78” x 80”. Double-check both your mattress and frame maker before you end up with a large gap between the two.

7. California King
7. California King
California King size mattress:
Length: 84 inch or 213 cm
Width: 72 inch or 182 cm
Usage: If the name is any clue, this size bed is not common in Canada and we recommend staying away from it. It is hard to find sheets and hard to resell your bed.
