Mattresses for Bunk Beds, Loft Beds, and Platform Beds in Canada

Bunk bed mattresses require different considerations than standard mattresses, especially when used on upper bunks or loft beds. Choosing the correct mattress helps maintain proper guardrail clearance, reduces fall risk, and ensures the bed frame functions as intended.

In Canada, mattress length and width are standardized, but mattress thickness is not. This difference is critical for bunk beds and loft beds, where excess height can reduce safety clearance. A mattress that feels comfortable on a regular bed may create safety issues when placed on an upper level.

For this reason, mattress selection should always start with the bed type, not just comfort preference. Our mattress selection focuses on safe heights, proper clearance, and reliable support, without placing unnecessary stress on the bed frame. All mattresses are designed to work with bunk beds, loft beds, platform beds, and trundle beds, using standard Canadian sizes suitable for both kids and adults.

Bunk Bed Mattresses: Safety, Fit, and Clearance

Bunk bed mattresses must meet safety clearance requirements. The most important measurement is the distance from the top of the mattress to the top of the guardrail on the upper bunk. If the mattress is too thick, this clearance is reduced, increasing the risk of falls.

As a general guideline, there should be at least 6 inches of space between the top of the mattress and the top of the guardrail. Younger children benefit from even more clearance. For this reason, a low-profile mattress for bunk bed use is typically recommended to maintain proper safety clearance on the upper bunk.

In addition to height, mattress weight also matters. Lightweight mattresses help keep the bunk bed within its overall weight capacity and reduce stress on the frame. This is why not every mattress sold in Canada is suitable for bunk bed use, even if the size technically fits.

Recommended Mattress Thickness by Bed Type

For upper bunks and loft beds, a 6-inch mattress is the safest option in most cases. This thickness works across our collections and helps maintain proper guardrail clearance. Some designs, such as select beds in our Cottage Collection, may allow a slightly thicker mattress, but clearance should always be confirmed before choosing an upgrade.

For lower bunks, safety clearance is less of a concern. Comfort and headroom matter more. In most bunk bed setups, a 6-inch mattress provides a balanced feel without making the space under the top bunk feel cramped. For taller bunk beds or single-over-double configurations, an 8-inch mattress can be used comfortably on the lower level.

For platform beds, mattress height is more flexible. To help avoid incorrect selections, we limit our mattress offerings to options up to 8 inches thick. This range works well for platform beds while remaining compatible with bunk and loft bed requirements. If a mattress choice does not match the intended bed setup, our team reviews the order and contacts customers to advise on the safest and most suitable option.

Important Note: Mattress length and width are standardized in Canada, but mattress thickness varies by model. When choosing a mattress for bunk beds or loft beds, thickness should always be checked to ensure proper safety clearance. View the full mattress thickness guide

Mattress Types Available

Our mattress lineup includes several options. Each type is selected to balance comfort, durability, and weight.

Foam mattresses
Lightweight and easy to handle. A practical choice for bunk beds.
Memory foam mattresses
Provide pressure relief and added comfort. Still light enough for bunk and loft beds.
Latex mattresses
Offer strong support and long-term durability. Suitable for everyday use.
Waterproof, bed bug-resistant mattresses
Designed for heavy-duty or institutional environments. Easy to maintain and built for durability.

We do not offer or recommend coil mattresses for bunk beds or loft beds. Low-profile coil mattresses are often less comfortable, and coil construction can amplify motion transfer. This movement can disturb a bunkmate's sleep and, over time, place additional stress on the bed frame.

All options are available in standard sizes, including twin bunk bed mattresses, full-size mattresses, and trundle bed mattresses.

Shop by Mattress Size

Choosing the correct mattress size starts with the bed frame. Mattress length and width follow standard Canadian dimensions, while thickness can vary by model and use.

This category lets you shop mattresses by size, making it easier to find the right fit for bunk beds, loft beds, or trundle systems.

Available Mattress Sizes

Twin mattress size (Single)
The most common size for bunk beds and loft beds. Ideal for kids’ rooms and compact spaces.
Twin XL mattress (Single XL)
Offers extra length compared to a standard Twin. Suitable for taller sleepers using bunk beds or loft beds.
Full mattress size (Double)
Provides more sleeping space than a Twin. Commonly used on lower bunks and in full-size bunk bed designs for teens or adults.
Full XL mattress (Double XL)
Combines extra length with added width. A practical option for adults using lower bunks or loft-style beds.
Queen-size mattress
Used in queen-over-queen bunk bed designs and platform beds. Provides balanced comfort and space.

King-size mattress
The largest standard option. Best suited for spacious rooms and platform bed frames.

Canadian-Made Bunk Bed Mattresses

Many of the products in this category are Canadian-made mattresses that meet higher manufacturing and safety standards. Producing mattresses in Canada helps ensure consistent sizing, reliable materials, and controlled quality. Local manufacturing also reduces transportation distance, lowers the carbon footprint, and supports the Canadian economy. These Canadian-made mattresses are suitable for kids, teens, and adults, and are designed to work properly with bunk beds and loft beds.
